Wild cat imitates the cry of a baby monkey to trick its prey

Cats have so many extraordinary behaviors that we can only begin to understand.  One such example has been witnessed by a team of researchers at the Wildlife Conservation Society and Federal University of Amazonas in Brazil.  A margay wild cat uses its vocal ability to imitate a cry of a squirrel sized monkey called pied tamarin.

Adult tamarins are fooled by the cry

A group of eight pied tamarins are up in the tree, eating the figs.  They have no reason to come down, taking any chances on the dangers that they might face.  That’s when the margay slowly approached the bottom of the tree.  But catching the monkeys by climbing up will not be easy, since monkeys are much better climbers and they can swing across the trees much faster.  So over time, margay has listened to the cry of the baby monkeys and perfected its craft.  So much so that when the big cat demonstrated the fake baby monkey cry, the adult margays thought that it was a real baby monkey.  One of them came down the tree to investigate, and four other monkeys also started to come down to check things out.  Once the leading monkey saw the big cat, it made the alarming danger call, and the rest fled back up the trees to safety.

This is an extraordinary display of skill and deceptive mind of a big cat.  It clearly demonstrates how clever and talented they are in outsmarting what we thought was a much more intelligent animal like a monkey.  It just proves that there are so much that we just don’t know about these amazing animals.

What do you think?  Does your adorable kitty cat make any special sounds or calls to fool the owner?  I’m sure that’s why your cat thinks she is the owner rather than you.
